Yorkshire Moorland
In Yorkshire we are very fortunate to have not one but two and a bit National park. The Yorkshire Dales National Park, the North York Moors National Park and a very large chunk of the Peak District National Park, along with a number of areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB’s) like Nidderdale.
The YDNP nowadays joins up with the Lake District National Park so it is almost possible to walk from East coast to West coast entirely in National Park and AONB territory (or west to east if you like the wind at your back).
All of these areas are full of natural beauty, abundant wildlife, deep valleys and high desolate moorland where only hardy sheep and grouse eke a living. They are also filled with history and custom. The NYMNP is renowned for its crimson heather clad uplands in August; and its villages dot the landscape with their distinctive red pantile roofs.
It is no surprise therefore that there are many opportunities for photographers. To illustrate the grandeur of God’s Own County and with extreme patience could even “snap” the occasional Red Deer stag roaming amongst the forests and uplands.
The images in this gallery depict the more remote areas of Yorkshire; its Moorland and Forests, and the faraway Fells (what farmers call the “High Ground”) where only the sheep and grouse graze.
